The way things are is not the way they have to be

Through my lifetime of work, I have come to understand that we are all seekers by nature: of truth and of understanding how and why.  While there are measurable indicators (health, education, standards of living) that the world is a better place than it was 100 or 1000 years ago, we have a long way to go.  Our ability to choose wisely seems to have always been outstripped by our desire to act in our own apparent self-interest.  This means we damage the planet and all of its inhabitants by our choice.  We must always be seeking a better way to do things and we must always be looking for our own errors as individuals and seek to correct them.

So, what am I doing about it?  If I see a problem; I look for a better way.  This is in my nature as an individual.  I recycle with fervour, yet I know that by some sources, municipal solid waste is a mere 2% of industrial solid waste.  Industrial waste reduce-reuse-recycle is not in the public eye and so we do not even have reliable measurements, let alone campaigns to reduce its volume.  The decisions behind industrial 3R are made by individuals, but these individuals have a motive different than planetary citizens.  I give my money to others in need, yet the problems they face are caused by issues seemingly out of my control. Child and family poverty is a main driver of physical and mental health issues, poor educational and employment prospects, and lack of physical safety and security. Though my children are grown, I fully support the need for improved education and the issues faced by educators worldwide. Lack of access to education leads to a lack of representation, underemployment and promotes exploitation. Lack of education is a poverty trap and continues the cycle of raising more children in poverty.

How do my actions help?  Ultimately then, while my own actions may have some small impact, but the visibility of all of our actions together leads to more people seeing, considering, and joining with us to do the same.  Some of us will have more impactful outcomes than others and these are the people we need to support the most, to encourage them not only to continue to act, but to be visible to the entire world.  Its through the collective work of all of us that we can make meaningful change in our own individual and group behaviour, resulting in a vastly improved outcome for the planet and its inhabitants.
